Alaska Blues’ goal is to contribute to the establishment of successful wild berry farms throughout Alaska by providing healthy plant stock, educational information to ensure success, and one-on-one consulting with farmers. Coming from a grassroots background ourselves, we want to make this a feasible undertaking for rural farmers as well as larger comme rcial growers.
Alaska Blues takes great pride in the fact that we will be instrumental in the overall growth of Alaskan agriculture. We will gladly share our growing methods, so that others will be able to self-propagate their own plants. We envision a cooperative effort, from Alaska’s Blues’ responsibility to supply starter stock, to the farms and markets that will arise from this agricultural opportunity. Anyone with a questioning mind only needs to do a little bit of research on Idaho’s wild black huckleberries popularity to see what a huge market exists and the many products that are created and marketed for high-end consumers. (Alaska Blues’ wild huckleberries are the same species!)
Dr. Dan Barney of the University of Idaho’s Cooperative Extension has dedicated many years to the same goal we share, to preserve the original wild stock and provide an opportunity for commercial harvesting through domestication. Dr. Barney has made a lifetime effort of his research and we appreciate all his help as well as his many publications regarding the successful cultivation of wild huckleberries.
